During the past five years, he's led 37 clients to the top of Mount Everest. This month, Garrett will lead alpinist and B.A.S.E. jumper Joby Ogwyn to the top of Everest as part of Discovery Channel's Everest Jump Live, airing this month. Garrett joined the WAC in 2009 and recently opened Seattle–based guide company Madison Mountaineering. We caught up with him before his latest trip to Everest. When did you first get into mountaineering? I first climbed Mount Rainier with my dad when I was 17 years old. The elements of the climb, such as goal-setting, following through on the preparation and training, the teamwork required to climb the glaciated slopes safely, and sharing memories making the summit with good friends and family were all very important and still are. At age 35, you've summited Everest six times. How does that feel? It feels good to make it to the top. What I enjoy most now is seeing the reaction in my climbers when they make the summit for the first time. How do you train for expeditions? Since I'm on expeditions more than half the year, I keep in shape through the activity of climbing itself. When I'm in Seattle, I usually exercise at the WAC. I try and visit the Club three to four times a week. Usually, I begin with a workout in Coed Fitness or Men's Fitness, and then I grab a quick snack at the Sports Café or book a massage at the Spa. What recommendation would you give to a mountaineering novice? There are a ton of wonderful climbing areas around Seattle, including Mount Olympus and Glacier Peak. For a first international expedition, I recommend Mount Kilimanjaro.
