NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 19 Meet the Athlete Cici West By Mae Jacobson, Associate Editor Seattle native Cici West began playing basketball competitively in high school at Holy Names Academy. She continued on to play AAU basketball with the encouragement of coach and now fellow WAC member Lindsey Wilson. Cici also trained with WAC coach Donald Watts and was awarded a full-ride scholarship to Portland State University, where she played three years before transferring living fit meet the athlete C O U R T E S Y C I C I W E S T to Seattle Pacific University to pursue her master's degree. Following an ACL injury, Cici finished her collegiate career at SPU in 2019. She now plays on the WAC women's team and serves as an assistant coach at The Bush School. Q. Tell us about some of your career achievements. A. In 2015, I set and still hold the Port- land State all-time record for rebounds in a single game. I received recognition as a Big Sky Winter All-Academic Athlete from 2014–2017 and was highlighted for a similar honor from 2018–2019 within the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Q. What's the Seattle basketball community like? A. It's an intricate network of coaches and players. I love seeing kids I used to coach at camps grow to compete at the highest levels. Q. How do you use the WAC? A. I've spent a lot of time on the court at the WAC, beginning as a teenager training with Donald. I also use the fitness floors to stay in shape and love cycling and yoga classes. Unfortunately, COVID-19 stopped our WAC season, but the short time we did get to play was fun. I miss it and can't wait to compete soon! Q. What does your basketball future hold? A. My goals are targeted toward coaching. I work full-time, but coaching allows me to stay connected to the game. Q. Any advice for aspiring athletes? A. Be a student first and athlete second. Challenging yourself in the classroom will pay off on the court and in life.
