The Volunteer Reader Program is one of our most successful. I'm a longtime reader in the program, Jon Fine walks with City Councilman and fellow WAC member Bruce Harrell in front of the Club. is the nation's largest affiliate of United Way, which Forbes ranks among the country's largest five nonprofits by total revenue. Leading the local affiliate is a big job with innumerable moving parts. Jon heads more than $100 million in annual fundraising, which comes from about 70,000 donors. "We work on some really big challenges in the community," he says. "I like to say, if United Way didn't exist, people would be inventing us." Thankfully, we don't have to. and I find it to be a highlight for me every week. You can really tell how much the kids enjoy it, and it feels good to know you're helping them have a fair start in life. Darrick Meneken is Managing Editor of WAC Magazine. When we started planning the Climb for the Community with the Seattle Seahawks, we said we would do whatever it takes to make sure struggling families have enough to eat. I reaffirmed what that meant by the time we summited Mount Rainier. This climb gained a lot of media attention. Former Seahawks head coach Jim Mora and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell were part of the group, and world-renowned climber Ed Viesturs was our guide. For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that raised more than $180,000 to meet people's basic needs. Day of Caring is one of my favorite days every year. In 2012, we had more than 12,500 people volunteer on projects in King County on one day. This photo shows me with a group of Nordstrom volunteers helping Goodwill get ready for a big event. 30 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | FEBRUARY 2013 You can find out more about the nonprofit organizations featured here online: © seeYourimpact.org © UnitedWayofKingCounty.org © specialolympicsWashington.org
