16 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2015 MEMBERS IN MOTION GREGORY DEAN was recently selected as Washington, D.C., fire chief. Formerly the head of Seattle Fire, he oversaw more than a thousand employees and managed the city's fire and emergency medical services. During his tenure as Seattle chief, the cardiac-arrest survival rate in the city improved 62 percent. As fire chief of the nation's capital, he will oversee 33 stations and 2,100 employees. Gregory retired from Seattle Fire in December 2014. He started his new position on May 1. CAPITAL FIRE CHIEF CHRISTOPHER MENDEZ, University of Washington head boxing coach, was named 2015 National Collegiate Boxing Association Coach of the Year. Christopher's boxing career began in the 1980s at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he won four consecutive Brigade Boxing Championships and two All-American awards from the NCBA. He began coaching UW in 2010. The Huskies had three individual national champions and one runner-up at the 2015 NCBA finals. The UW women's team repeated as national champs. JENNIFER PORTER, owner and operator of Satsuma Designs, recently saw her company featured by Seattle's Child magazine. Jennifer's products use eco-friendly materials, like organic bamboo and cotton. She focuses on effort-saving designs, such as smocks, pacifier clips, and blankets. All of Satsuma's products are designed and made in Seattle, and a portion of every sale is donated to Washington state food banks.
