22 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2015 T here's no doubt about it: The U.S. Open at Chambers Bay will put the national golfing spotlight on the Pacific Northwest this year. WAC members can keep their fairway fever rolling—and even meet some of the players—at the 11th annual Boeing Classic later this summer. A WAC Community Partner, the Boeing Classic has a strong history of exciting play, close finishes, and personal connections between players and fans. Regarding the competition, five of the first 10 tournaments ended in sudden-death playoffs. Last year's Boeing Classic winner, Scott Dunlap, cinched the win in a playoff with Mark Brooks. The Boeing Classic is part of the PGA's Champions Tour, exclusive to professional golfers ages 50 and up. The 54-hole tournament carries a $2 million purse, and proceeds support Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason, The First Tee of Greater Seattle, and other local charities. Last year's tournament drew 94,000 spectators during its three rounds, making it one of the largest sporting events in the state. "The WAC is honored to have the Boeing Classic as one of our Community Partners again in 2015," Senior Vice President Athletics, Special Projects & Community Partners Wayne Milner says. "I encourage all WAC members to attend—whether you're a golf fan or not. It's an experience you won't soon forget." WAC members receive free admission to the tournament with their Club membership card. Members can also volunteer to help put on the event. More than a thousand volunteers play critical roles in making the Boeing Classic a success. "Our partnership with the WAC and its members has been an integral part of the tournament since we began in 2005," Tournament Director Michelle DeLancy says. "We look forward to continuing to provide WAC members with a fun, community- focused event that showcases our region." This year's Classic takes place August 21–23 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, the tournament's home since its inception. Other events during tournament week begin August 17.
