The classes move you through stations and provide an intensity that's difficult to replicate on your own. Wednesday: 5:15–6 pm NAOMI THALENBERG Bond Girl Kettlebells A metabolic kettlebell training class for women only. Thursday: 5:15–6 pm Master swimmer Steve Ruiter has been swimming since he was a child. In his late 30s, he joined U.S. Masters Swimming and placed in the top five in national events. Now 48, Steve swims regularly at the WAC and competes in races and triathlons. We checked in with him after last summer's 3.2-mile Fat Salmon Open Water Swim in Lake Washington. Steve finished first in his age group and 12th out of 107 swimmers overall—all without a wetsuit. At this year's Fat Salmon, you swam about seven seconds faster than your first time in 2008. What's your training secret? I go to the pool as often as I can, either before or after work. In the summertime I also swim at Lake Washington. I also like using the track above the gym. When the weather is nice, I bike to work, nine miles each way. Lake Washington can be challenging— algae, darkness, boats. What's your biggest struggle during races there? The toughest part is keeping track of who is who. The first mile is the PERSONAL TRAINING By Naomi Thalenberg hardest in terms of people. Afterward, everyone's a little more spread out. What keeps you motivated while training? Each year at the WAC pool they put on the Salmon Swim Challenge. You set a goal, and after every swim you move a fish across the wall to represent how far you've gone. My goal this year was 60 miles. I finished the two-month challenge with 68 miles. During the last five years you've ventured into triathlons. What made you take up those races? I've always wanted to try triathlons. I've already set my lifetime personal best in swimming. In triathlons, I can still set a personal best. I don't have the 18-yearold me to beat. What do you like most about swimming at the WAC? I enjoy helping other WAC members with their stroke and technique. Everyone here is very friendly and interested. It's great.
