Also at the party: A 16-foot bonanza boat displayed in the main lobby as the evening's top prize. MEn'S fACE-LifT Finishing touches, such as walnut panels in the archway entrance to the reading room, were installed during a renovation of the men's lounge. iF yoU reCoGnize THe nAme JoHn doyle bishop, you probably know him as Seattle's fashion idol who owned one of downtown's most upscale clothing stores from 1945 until his death in 1980. Clara berg, costume and textile specialist at the museum of History and industry (moHAi), recently uncovered details of bishop's mysterious past, including his residence—the former penthouse apartment here at the WAC. His shop, located on the corner of 5th Avenue and Union Street, currently houses brooks brothers. This past march would have marked bishop's 100th birthday. in honor of that, moHAi put on a sold-out lecture about bishop. longtime Seattle residents recall his rebellious tradition of painting a green stripe down 5th Avenue leading to his storefront. bishop was known for his impeccable taste in fashion and his elaborate attire. His legacy and eye for fashion are engrained in Club history and now stored by moHAi. A TRAvELER'S fAShiOn ShOW Women attended a travel wardrobe show by designer Don Loper. The show included outfits made especially for light travel, such as a slim silk and satin opera-length evening gown and a reversible coat of various lengths. Wrestling match Ben Davidson, a 6-foot-7, 245pound university of Washington football tackle, represented the Club at the u.S. Olympic wrestling trials held at Iowa State College. Ben was the first member to qualify for Olympic honors since Vic Markov in 1936. GOLf TOuRnEY The Men's Golf Tournament, held at Rainier Golf Club, featured more than 60 prizes amounting to 8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY 2013 Exercise of the Month $1,600 in value. The tournament champion was Erv Parent, who claimed the WAC title for the second consecutive year. SpAniSh MuSiC World-renowned Flamenco guitarist Carlos Montoya visited the WAC to play traditional Spanish tunes. According to an article in WAC News, he was the first guitarist in the world to play Flamenco music on the concert stage. hAnDBALL LESSOnS National handball singles champion Jimmy Jacobs of Los Angeles taught a clinic on the latest handball techniques on the 8th Floor. After his presentation, members of the WAC Handball Club joined him at a banquet. Place left knee and left arm on the bench, with right leg on the floor. Grasp the weight with your right hand. 2. While keeping a flat back and tight core, pull the weight toward your rib cage until your upper arm is parallel to the floor. 3. Lower the weight and repeat 10–12 times.
