Gateway Update a n n a d e l a pa z By William Cohen, Vice President Operations Left: Members Steve Whitaker and Danner Graves enjoy a Delicious Detour. Right: The new WAC Lobby floor near its halfway point. New lobby oh so close Final touches in works as construction nears end W ow! We're almost there. With four months of WAC Lobby construction behind us, we can finally say the new lobby is almost complete. Many thanks to you, our members, for your patience during this very visible—and at times undeniably inconvenient—upgrade to our historic Clubhouse. We believe you'll be happy with the final product, which will include a new terrazzo floor, improved lighting, a beautified ceiling, and much more. Floor installation should wrap up by early May, and the detours associated with the project will end soon afterward. I hope many of you found your way to Torchy's during construction. Our Delicious Detour offered some fantastic tastings as well as complimentary WAC Signature Sticky Buns daily. Sometime during the next few weeks, we'll be installing an espresso During WAC Lobby construction, cart inside the WAC Club Shop, an we invite you to relax in Torchy's added bonus to our new main floor bar on the 2nd Floor. Enjoy space. Temporary area rugs will be complimentary coffee and treats installed this month. The new rugs in the morning and enhanced should arrive by late June. happy hour in the afternoon. 14 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY 2013 The lobby's new look will also come together with furnishings and new seating areas, complete with charging stations. Looking back on the project, I can say that perhaps the most exciting moment for me was when we learned that we'd be able to save and restore the original crown molding above the high-rise elevators. That corner of the lobby now stands as a nod to the Club's 83-year history as the molding, drinking fountain, stone walls, and elevator doors are all original. What a great way to combine the elegance of the past with the modern touches we will all soon enjoy. Thank you again for your patience during this historic improvement to the WAC Lobby. As the Gateway Project nears its end, we look forward to unveiling the final product and to watching as members embrace and enjoy this new space. —William Cohen is Vice President Operations.
