Since then, the soon-to-be 58-year-old has run through cities around the world, including Tokyo, Rome, Istanbul and Johannesburg. We caught up with Rex, treasurer of the WAC Tri/Cycle Club, to talk about his passion, persistence and Paris. Who inspired you to start running? My junior high school cross-country coach. He figured a skinny little kid was better suited to running than football. What keeps you motivated? I love the freedom of runningfrom local Seattle streets, to mountain trails, to foreign citiesand also the collegiality of runners. How often do you train? I run or cycle four to five times a week and lift weights two to five times a week. WAC trainer Amy Schumacher has helped me work on my goal of increasing strength while adding minimal mass. I average about seven to eight hours of training per week. When Im training for longer running or bicycle events, training can occupy 10 to 15 hours a week. How do you treat yourself? I get regular massages and drink good winebut not together and not necessarily in that order. What advice would you give aspiring endurance athletes? Advertising executive Dan Wieden coined it best for Nike: Just Do It. I would also say start slow, start small and dream big. Any favorite memories? The 2001 Paris Marathon. It leads through the citys winding streets, and they served wine at the last few mile marks. I tasted some at mile 25. 52 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JANUARY 2013 T uesday/Thursday: 6:457:45 am 6th Floor Pool Joints in Motion Ease joint and muscle pain.
