10 | WAC Magazine | wac.net upfront elevator update It's been the talk of the WAC for months. e Elevator Modernization Project is about to begin—and we can't wait! For the first time since the Club opened its doors in 1930, the high-rise elevators and the high-rise service car are getting new motors. e project is scheduled to begin by mid-January, and work will continue for just more than a year. During the mod- ernization, three of the Club's four high- rise lis will always remain in operation. When the project wraps up, all four of the high-rise cars will have new motors and control systems. "is is going to be big," WAC Vice President Operations Bill Cohen says. "It means a few growing pains, but the end result is going to be more-efficient elevators we all will enjoy." As with any major infrastructure improvement, those "growing pains" are inevitable. To help offset the impact, members can take the stairs and avoid longer waits—especially in the morning, at lunch, and aer work. New building directories and in-stairwell signage make it easy to get where you're going. e low-rise elevators—located immediately behind the welcome desk when you enter the Club—will take you to the 2nd and 3rd floors quickly. So will the grand staircase. e central internal stairwell, now also known as the green stairwell, will get you anywhere else you need to go. Need more incentive to take the stairs? Look for contests, trivia, and surprise giveaways inside the stairwells during the project, which will begin with the service car. Most WAC team members will also be taking the stairs, but cart transportation and some other service tasks will share the main cars for the next few months. Time to climb! Elevator Modernization Project set to lift off Did you know? • A new art exhibit is up in the WAC grand stairway. The photos of Seattle-based photographer and mixed-media artist Eirik Johnson are on loan from the G. Gibson Gallery in Lower Queen Anne. Photo titled Abandoned Shack H, Mushroom Camp near Sisters, OR, shown at left. • WAC Personal Trainer Dan Dill, who competes in stair climbs around the western U.S., has run the 377 steps from B2 to the Top of the WAC via the green stairwell in 2 minutes, 11 seconds. • Built in 1905, the Galer Crown in Queen Anne is one of Seattle's oldest public staircases.
