club life
reciprocal clubs
Two very different WAC reciprocal clubs
mark the lower shores of the St. Johns
River in Jacksonville, Florida. e aptly
named River Club, in the heart of the
city, offers straightforward and elegant
dining. e business-focused club in-
cludes the 34th and 35th floors of
1 Independent Drive, just a block off the
river. e club's St. Johns Dining Room
offers stunning views of Jacksonville's
skyline and serves house specialties,
such as the chef 's own she-crab soup—
similar to bisque—and a one-of-a-kind
bread pudding. Meanwhile, the club's
Vue34 lounge is a highlight in Jackson-
ville's cocktail and social scene.
Six miles south and out of the urban
core, the Alfred du Pont mansion and
English gardens of Epping Forest Yacht
& Country Club invite reciprocal mem-
bers to relax. Built in 1926, Epping For-
est quickly gained stature as one of the
country's finest estates of the 1920s and
1930s. e Vanderbilts and Carnegies at-
tended lavish parties here, and President
Gerald Ford also visited. If you go, take
some time to wander the facility and
grounds. But don't be fooled. e prop-
erty offers all the amenities you would
expect in a modern facility—with six
lighted tennis courts and just as many
pools. You'll also enjoy a large fitness
center. e club's marina and rental fleet
offer easy access to the St. Johns River,
the lifeblood of Jacksonville, northern
Florida's commercial and cultural hub.
