20 | WAC Magazine | wac.net Q. What's your favorite part about playing soccer? A. e competition. As a young boy, everything I did was a game or a competition. Soccer was the sport that challenged me the most. In professional soccer, you're surrounded by great players. at really makes you want to be better in all aspects of the game. Q. How was your time playing for the Sounders? A. e team I played on was in the USL, which was the league right below the MLS. We were a great team and won the USL Championship in 2007. e chemistry and camaraderie among that group of guys was incredible. I am proud to say that I am still friends with players on that team today. Q. How would you describe the local soccer community? A. e Seattle soccer scene is amazing. Past players stick around town and coach. at has led to more great players and more great coaches. Everyone knows each other, everyone plays against each other, and everyone competes. e local culture we've built is based on a lot of mutual respect. Q. What advice would you give young athletes? A. Young players today have so much on their plate. Have fun. Don't let the game stress you out. And ask questions. Q. What does your future hold? A. I'm getting married in July. Soccer-wise, I want to stay healthy and continue to play for the WAC. I'm also itching for a Mercer Island High School state title. living fit Exercise of the month / meet the athlete Exercise of the month Bottoms-Up Shoulder Press WAC Personal Trainer Sara Moser demonstrates a Bottoms-Up Shoulder Press. This exercise engages your core and improves wrist and grip strength. Start in a standing position with knees bent slightly. Hold a kettlebell up shoulder-high in one hand and engage your core. Extend your free hand toward the ceiling, keeping your shoulders relaxed. Press the kettlebell up until both arms fully extend toward the ceiling. Return to starting position. Complete 8–10 reps. Switch arms and repeat. 1 2 Meet the athlete: Colin Rigby Colin Rigby joined the WAC in October 2015 after discovering the Club's men's soccer team. A Mercer Island native, he has coached the Mercer Island High School boys soccer team since 2011, twice leading the Islanders to the 3A state title game.
