8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2015 End of an era Memories: 1978 By Dee Sanwick, WAC Historian AN EVENING SMORGASBORD A WAC Beer and Sausage Night featured 12 imported beers, 10 types of sausage, fresh-baked bread, and a selection of cheeses and mustards. The dinner even had a roving accordionist to accompany the food with festive polka. FOUNDERS DAY August 1978 marked 50 years since the WAC's original leaders conceived of the Club idea. Senior members of more than 20 years celebrated with cocktails and dinner in the Crystal Ballroom. Special guests included original board member Torchy Torrance and seasoned manager of Men's Conditioning Earl Willits. FRIDAY NIGHT FILMS The WAC screened a series of complimentary films for members to enjoy, including Academy Award–winning An American in Paris (1951), Grand Hotel (1932), and The Philadelphia Story (1940). Each film was accompanied by an optional themed dinner. WORLD CUISINE The WAC hosted a series of meals featuring international cuisine and culture. The themed meals heavily featured European and regional American cuisine—including food from the Pacific islands, Russia, and the U.S. South. ROYAL RECOGNITION Royal Brougham, WAC member and famous sports writer for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, received the first-ever WAC Recognition Award. The award was designed to honor Club members who have served the needs of the Seattle community. Royal's award was given at a dinner ceremony in his honor. { BUZZ } By Virginie Bourgue 2012 Lullaby Winery Rosé de Virginie; Mourvèdre and Grenache; Columbia Valley, Washington Tasting Notes: Like many rosés from the Côtes de Provence in France, this one is dry, refreshing, and light. Its delicate structure delivers subtle aromas of cherry blossoms and fennel seed. And its silky texture gives way to a surprising richness of flavor that proves thirst-quenching, especially on hot summer days spent outside. It includes two-thirds Mourvèdre and one-third Grenache. Discovery: As a winemaker I maintain an intimate connection with nature. Our grapes are sourced from vineyards around Walla Walla and other areas in Eastern Washington. The fall of 2012 set a state record for grape harvest in Washington, and it was the first time red wine grapes eclipsed white. This wine benefitted from the immensity of that harvest as great grapes were plentiful. Whenever I'm making a rosé, I try to think about spring. The fragrance of spring flowers and the wonderful cast of evening light are the perfect compliments to this vintage. It would pair perfectly with any of the salmon dishes found on the Torchy's menu, and would prove a great selection throughout the WAC's Seafood Month this June. —Virginie Bourgue is a WAC member and the owner and winemaker at Lullaby Winery, located in Port Townsend. Clifford was born in October 1908 in Tacoma and attended Stadium High School, the University of Washington, and M.I.T. At the time of his birth, Theodore Roosevelt was president and World War I was still six years away. Clifford served in the U.S. Coast Guard at Fort Worden in the 1930s and rose through the ranks of the American Can Co., where he worked for 42 years. He passed away at home on Mercer Island. SEVEN CLUB TEAMS traveled to the NACAD national championship basketball tournament this past April, coming home with three second-place finishes. The WAC Open team went 3-0 to advance to the finals before losing in overtime to the New York Athletic Club. The WAC's Golden Masters also secured a second-place spot despite losing their center, Neil McIrvin, to injury.
