36 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2015 A S E A S O N T O R E L A X — N O T ! A h, summertime! Time to slow down, relax, and … wait a minute! This is no time to while away the days. The WAC calendar is jam-packed with fun this season, much of it outside the Clubhouse walls. Start your summer early with the 20s/30s trip to Safeco Field to see the Mariners on Saturday, June 6. "It's going to be a great evening of baseball and socializing," Event Coordinator Mary Ellen Jilek says. Joining in will be members of Portland's Multnomah Athletic Club. "The mixing and mingling between both Clubs is great," Mary Ellen says. "MAC members showed us Port- land, and now it's our turn to host them." Baseball not your thing? How about a tour of the International District or our 8th annual Scavenger Hunt on Lake Union. "The Scavenger Hunt embraces every- thing we love about Seattle in the summer," Senior Event Manager Robert Laurent says. "Being out on the water, enjoying great views of the city, and spending time with old friends or new. Of course, throwing in a trivia contest and catered food and beverages just kicks up the fun factor." Member James Williams has been on the winning scavenger hunt team two of the past three years and knows a third crown won't come easy. "Last year we managed to scrape out a win," James recalls, saying he's made many new friends and even joined an event planning committee as a result of his participation. (For more on Club Programs committees, see page 21.) WAC members wanting to take their fitness routines outside can join a three-week outdoor Zumba series at 5:30 pm on Mon- days at Freeway Park beginning July 20. A similar yoga series at the park will take place at noon on Wednesdays beginning July 22. "It's a great way to get some fresh air and exercise," Fitness Programs Manager George Sommerrock says. For swimmers, Aquatics & Junior Programs Manager Kelly Parr is planning a kids open-water swimming series in Lake Washington. "It's a great introduction to lake swimming," Kelly says. "Half of the workouts will be in the WAC pool and half will take place off Madison Park Beach." Also, don't forget to take advantage of the Inn at the WAC for yourself or your summer visitors. Our central location and diverse amenities create the perfect environment for a summer stay in the city. WAC member and Seafair CEO Beth Knox stays at the inn every summer around Seafair Weekend, her busiest time of year. "For me, having the WAC staff who knows me and provides such great customer service during an intense schedule of events is a huge factor," she says. "It's such a centrally located venue and the conveniences are so great. There's something to fit every need." With special programs planned all sum- mer long—in the Club and around town— your calendar should soon be as packed as the Seafair log boom. TRIATHLON RELAY TEAMS The Seafair Triathlon is summer's marquee event for many Tri/Cycle Club members, some of whom are also recruiting relay teams to compete this year. "The Tri/Cycle Club is a great way to connect with other WAC members," says Cathy Jeney, one of the relay organizers. "You don't need to do all three events." The same can be said for joining the Tri/Cycle Club, which provides great training opportunities for swimmers, bikers and runners, including those who focus on a single sport. "It's really about connecting WAC members with each other and meeting new training buddies," Cathy says. New to Seafair this year, a stand-up paddleboard race series will culminate with the finals on the hydroplane course during Seafair Weekend, at the end of Fleet Week. The headline weekend also includes the Blue Angles air show, to be joined this year by the Breitling Jet Team, making its North America debut. "Don't miss Seafair Weekend," Michelle says. "The airshow is going to be spectacular, and the party on the lake never disappoints." —Darrick Meneken is Managing Editor of WAC Magazine. L U K E R U TA N ( 4 )
