P erched on a grassy knoll overlooking Lake Merritt in Oakland, California, sits the stately Bellevue Club. This six-story French-inspired clubhouse was designed to pay homage to Marie Antoinette's country estate—Petit Trianon— complete with high ceilings, intricate ivory paneling, and a casual elegance that makes guests feel as though they are visiting a wealthy distant relative. The building, now in the National Register of Historic Places, became The Bellevue Club in 1929. The waterfront property is flanked by a greenbelt of parks and playgrounds that lend a bucolic air to this otherwise urban environ- ment. A popular location for weddings and business meetings, The Bellevue Club is a perfect sanctuary from the Bay Area's fast-paced life. The Bellevue Club features a top-notch wait staff, onsite park- ing, fine dining, free Wi-Fi, and a five-lane indoor lap pool. It's also a great place to have a drink and enjoy a bite from the bar before catching a nearby football, baseball or basketball game. The Bellevue Club has some overnight accommodations avail- able, but you'll need to make reservations early. Rooms are simple and comfortable with picturesque views of Lake Merritt. If you're looking for a change of pace during your next trip to Northern California, I recommend giving The Bellevue Club a visit. Your letter of introduction from WAC Member Services is your ticket to this home away from home. 10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2015
