"My daughter just turned 30, and she used to go to WeeWACs that weekend," Joani says. "That shows how long we've been doing this." Joani never fails to buy a chance for the Jubilee Grand Prize. Every year, she would look at the announcement of the winner and jokingly tell the security guards that they misspelled her name. Last year, Joani forgot to check the lobby poster on Jubilee night. The next morning, when she came downstairs, she was greeted with congratulations from team members. Joani was puzzled. Then someone showed her the poster with her name on it—for real. "I fell down in a chair," she recalls. Joani will be back at the WAC during this year's Jubilee, and she plans to enter the Grand Prize giveaway yet again. We know this much, whether it's Joani or someone else, one lucky WAC member will win this year's Grand Prize—a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250. And yes, it's Red Hot! Party propagators Like many members, Kelly Burdette has become a Jubilee ambassador during her time at the Club. "Every single year it seems like more and more people join us," she says of her and husband Lee's annual Jubilee tradition. The Burdettes started out a couple of years ago by inviting a few friends to join them for the night. Then, Kelly says, she started inviting everyone she thought would be interested—"Some clients, friends, my sister, friends of hers." In all, 21 people, members and nonmembers alike, joined the Burdettes for last year's party. Kelly's crew does it up for the big 28 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2013 night. "We always all buy new dresses," she says. "We get the guys to wear tuxedoes, matching ties, and boutonnieres." For the Burdettes, Jubilee is the perfect chance to share the unique grandeur and mood of the Club around the holidays. Kelly loves gathering before the event at an Inn at the WAC suite and then watching everyone go downstairs, fan out, and discover everything the party offers. "I love running into people in the elevator or calling each other on the cell phone and saying, 'Have you tried the sushi bar?'" she says. Jubilee in motion—the opportunity to move around and experience so much variety and meet so many people—is a point of pride for the night's organizers. "If you're part of the short-attention-span crowd, the world is your oyster here," Melissa says. Whether you want to eat your way through the party, dance the night away, enjoy performance art, gamble in the Crystal Casino, or have your palm read, you can—and a whole lot more. "So many people, so little time," Melissa says. "Just the fact that we have 800 members all in one place, it's a unique annual pop of excitement. And that's exactly how we want it to be." —M.
