It opens on Christmas Eve with two of them, poet Rodolfo and his friend the painter, doing their best to stay warm by burning pages from Rodolfo���s latest drama. Joined by two more friends, one of whom brings food and wine, they are soon laughing and eating heartily. Their landlord comes to collect rent and they ply him with wine. When yet another knock on the door is heard, we meet Mimi, a neighbor who is cold and has come to ask for a match for her candle.
