Dr. Ruanne Barnabas
was recently named
holder of the King
K. Holmes Endowed
Professorship in STD
and AIDS research
at the University
of Washington.
A native of South Africa, Ruanne arrived
in Seattle to conduct her postdoctoral
research at the University of Washington
in 2006 and joined the UW faculty in
2010. Her work aims to identify effective
and efficient HIV and STD prevention
and treatment strategies to inform public
health policy. e three-year rotating
endowed professorship recognizes and
supports individuals with exceptional
capability, promise, and commitment
to STD and HIV research and training.
Ruanne joined the WAC in 2016.

Boxing champion Jack Dempsey celebrated his birthday with a luncheon at the
Washington Athletic Club on June 24, 1944. Dempsey, who served in World
War II, enjoyed the aernoon alongside old friends, fellow veterans, and former
boxers Ben Sherman and Floyd Johnson. Above are their autographs, collected
by former WAC employee Ed Moore.
