20 WAC Magazine | wac.net When foot pain has your back (to blame) By David G. Lee, Doctor of Chiropractic If you've ever experienced plantar fasci- itis then you know how painful this heel problem can be. What you might not realize is that heel problems don't always begin with your feet. Several factors increase your risk of developing plantar fasciitis, including: • Exercise that involves running, dancing or jumping • Extended standing or walking on hard surfaces • Being overweight Treatment for plantar fasciitis ranges from improved footwear to physical therapy to steroid injections. ese treatments, however, could be sidestepping a deeper problem with your body mechanics. Whenever we're on our feet, the stress from our weight should be evenly distributed between both feet and both legs. An imbalance in this equilibrium can lead to physical problems and pain, including in our feet. e human body involves a complex architecture held together in large part by our bones. Of these, the bones of the pelvic skeleton are some of the most important, especially when dealing with balance. A structural malfunction in the pelvis oen creates a domino effect that materializes in foot pain, including plantar fasciitis. When our balance fails, our hips, knees and feet absorb more pressure than they should. e good news is that a simple check of pelvic alignment can determine the degree of imbalance and set us on the road to repair. e higher the demand we put on our feet—regular running, for example—the more likely problems will manifest. By correcting mis- alignments we can keep our bodies well-tuned and pain-free. WAC member David G. Lee, D.C., practices at Midtown Chiropractic and Rehabilitation.
