Drive away your winter blues with the WAC Golf Club By Mae Jacobson, Associate Editor This winter was one of Seattle's wettest ever, so a sunny summer of golf couldn't be more inviting. Hit the greens and soak up some rays with WAC Golf Club socials and tournaments all season long. Organized by Athletic Programs Manager Darin Barr, the WAC Golf Club spends the season visiting courses around Puget Sound. Players of all abilities are welcome to join any nine-hole twilight event or club tournament. Longtime member Newby Herrod joined the golf club more than a decade ago for its convenience and hasn't missed a season since. "Darin sets up tee times, organizes events, and so much more," Newby says. "He takes care of the sort of things I never get around to. As a result, I get to play much more." In addition to enjoying scheduled rounds, golf club members gain access to private courses around the region. For member James Williams, this is an especially good perk. "I love the beautiful scenery at some of the courses we play," James says. "I hit one of the longest drives of my life at Sand Point Country Club. The view of Lake Washington was so amazing I almost forgot to mark where my ball landed." With about 150 participants, the WAC Golf Club is the perfect place for like-minded members to meet and socialize. Darin works to pair players, creating a friendly environment for all. "There's always a little friendly competition," member Jennifer Moreland says. "But ultimately it's a very encouraging place to get comfortable playing golf." lub C
