The Vieux Carré is a great example. Named for New Orleans' oldest neighborhood—the French Quarter—the Vieux Carré (pronounced voo-car-ay) was invented at the famed Hotel Monteleone's Carousel Bar. Head bartender Walter Bergeron's sophisticated and potent concoction quickly became popular for its complex and unique flavor. Nowadays, it's considered a New Orleans classic. You can still visit Hotel Monteleone, where you can sit on the carousel within the grand old building and sip on this Southern star. New Orleans' cocktail history is rich enough to fill a week's vacation. If you don't have time, try this recipe instead or order one at Torchy's. Cheers!
