10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016 N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R | 2 0 1 6 { BUZZ } S EATTLE IS A CITY OF STAIRS. We have more than 600 publicly accessible stairways. The WAC also has its share of stairs. Explore the Club's many steps in a new way with fresh signage, building directories, and stair colors—all being rolled out in anticipation of the Elevator Modernization Project, set to begin in early 2017. During the project, three of the Club's four high-rise lifts will always remain in operation. When the project wraps up, all three of the main elevators and the high-rise service car will have new motors and control systems. In the meantime, familiarize yourself with our newly labeled green and orange stairways. A new club directory displays which levels each stairwell can access. New landing signs will also help you get around. During the elevator upgrade, members can help floor-to-floor traffic run more smoothly by using the stairs whenever possible. Need more incentive? Look for contests, trivia, and surprise giveaways inside the stairwells during the project. Stay current with all Club projects at wac.net/ club-projects. ■ There are 377 steps from the bottom of the Statue of Liberty to the top of her crown. The WAC's central internal staircase (green), has the exact same number. Coincidence? ■ If you climb the green staircase 61 times, bottom to top, you will have ascended the same height as going from sea level to the summit of Mount Rainier. ■ Climbing 12 steps burns roughly 5 calories. How many will you burn today? Looking up! Did you know? Elevator Modernization Project
