8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016 Memories: 1987 By Dee Sanwick, WAC Historian CRIME OF PASSION Members celebrated Valentine's Day with a murder mystery tour that stopped on Whidbey Island, traveled over Deception Pass, and ended in a Victorian mansion in La Conner. INTERNATIONAL INTRIGUE Brussels' Château Sainte-Anne was added to the WAC's extensive network of reciprocal clubs. A private club since 1961, the Château Saint-Anne features indoor and outdoor tennis. It remains a reciprocal club in 2016. RAINIER MOUNTAINEERS The Club offered members two opportunities to scale Mount Rainier during the summer. Guided by a local company, the climbs were open to all members and their guests. GOODBYE GARAGE Construction of U.S. Bank Centre, located on Union Street across from the WAC Clubhouse, began and included the demolition of the WAC's old Windsor Garage. In exchange for the old garage, the WAC received the eight-level underground garage used today. It opened in January 1989. CROSSWORD CRAZY WAC Member Paul Grandstrom created a new crossword for WAC Magazine. A crossword puzzle champion, Grandstrom was ranked 28th in the nation and had competed at the U.S. Open Crossword Puzzle Championships. Jubilee's grand prize Holiday hours THE MAIN EVENT RETURNS for its 20th year this coming January 27–28. This black-tie affair is a WAC favorite, featuring cocktails, comedy, dinner, and a 10-bout boxing card on two separate nights. Highlighting male and female athletes from some of the best boxing programs in the nation, The Main Event is an annual sellout. Begin your evening with drinks, followed by dinner and laughs from returning comedian Don Friesen or funnyman Dan Grueter, who's making his Main Event debut. Afterward, head to the WAC Arena (aka the 8th Floor gym), complete with boxing ring, bell, and ringside seats. Fighters from the University of Washington, UCLA, the U.S. Military Academy, the Air Force Academy, and more are slated to compete. See page 45 for ticket information. GO ZERO TO 60 in 6.9 seconds with this year's Jubilee grand prize. With 208 horsepower and a top speed of 149 miles per hour, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 in night black will be parked in the lobby all November.
