8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY / JUNE 2016 By Dee Sanwick, WAC Historian SLAM DUNK Dinner speaker and Seattle SuperSonics star Jack Sikma delighted Father Son Banquet attendees of all ages with pictures, prizes, and a basketball clinic for would-be hoopsters. OLYMPIC HONOR WAC member Loren Davidson was the lucky winner of the chance to carry the Olympic flame. Loren represented the Club as he jogged through the UW campus with the torch. Loren's run was a nod to the many Olympic athletes the WAC has had the honor of knowing. ISLAND STYLE The 21–40 singles club threw a Hawaiian luau party titled "Maui Wowie." Partygoers wore tropical garb and enjoyed a cruise on the sparkling waters of Puget Sound while indulging in dancing, keg beer, and themed drinks. BRAIN GAMES University of Washington psychology professors Elizabeth and Geoffrey Loftus spoke about the lasting influence of video games on the human psyche. The Loftuses' lunchtime lecture featured their book Mind at Play: The Psychology of Video Games, a brilliant analysis of why video games are more than just a fad. Memories: 1984 M AY / J U N E | 2 0 1 6 { BUZZ } A WAC TEAM MEMBER since 2004, Eder Cobaxin works in the Receiving Department in the Clubhouse's basement level. Though you might not see him often—or at all—he's hard at work. Eder's co-workers recognized his passion and dedication by voting him 2015's Team Member of the Year. "It felt awesome," Eder says of hearing his name announced at the Team Member Awards Banquet this past February. "I was honored and surprised." Eder enjoys his work, describing his co-workers as the best part of his job. "I love the people I work with, they make the day fun and easy," he says. "We're always looking out for each other." Purchasing Supervisor Tony Sundberg, Eder's manager, describes him as enthusiastic, energetic and positive. "I'm extremely proud of Eder for winning an award voted on by his peers," Tony says. "It shows that his dedication to the WAC doesn't go unnoticed." Other employees honored at the awards banquet included Controller Sandy Cramer, who has worked at the WAC for 40 years, as well as 30-year team members Bill Cohen, Vice President Operations, and housekeeper Elma Tingley. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WAC'S traveling A-Division men's basketball team! The squad overcame a couple of slow starts and swept its way to victory at the Pacific Coast Athletic Clubs (PCAC) championship tournament, held in March at the Spokane Club. Team members (pictured, from left) Marcus Clift, Justin McCullum, Michael Kirkham, Mark Robinowitz, Lukas Henne, Ken Ottrix, Kyle Born, Kellan Moll, and John Chaney brought home the trophy. (Justin McCullum is also featured in this issue's Meet the Athlete on page 50.) The WAC also sent seven teams to the North American Association of Club Athletic Directors national basketball tournament at Portland's Multnomah Athletic Club in late April, just after press time.
