By Peter Christian La Marca Prosecco N/V Veneto, Italy Tasting Notes: A delicate, well-balanced Prosecco, showing a good blend of baked apple, sour lemon, and grapefruit, with a hint of creamy minerality. Discovery: Unlike champagne, Prosecco is usually produced using the Charmat method, in which the fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, making the wine less expensive to produce. Given these comparisons, it would seem that Prosecco is necessarily inferior to champagne, but this is definitely not the case. Though these wines can be viewed as somewhat lighter, they are often thought of as excellent champagne substitutes because of their dry quality. Founded more than 40 years ago, La Marca winery was awarded a Top 100 Wines of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2007. La Marca is the only Prosecco producer from Italy's Veneto region to be awarded this honor. This Prosecco is available on the Torchy's wine list and for purchase at the Sports Café and Club Shop. It will also be featured at this year's Jubilee. —Peter Christian is WAC Vice President Food & Beverage and a Level 1 Sommelier. Sommelier's Selection Sheila Walsh stands atop the podium after winning one of her two U.S. titles. SHE'S THE FASTEST WOMAN on two wheels! Member Sheila Walsh won two USA Cycling national championships this past summer. She claimed the 50-and-over track title at the Marymoor Velodrome, and the 60-and-over road title on a hilly 30-mile course in Snowbasin, Utah. Sheila spent four years chasing national crowns and is already eyeing next fall's world championship races. She trains regularly at the Club, including in Pilates mat classes, but says that weight training with WAC Personal Trainer Scott Spraggins pushed her over the top. "That was really valuable," she says. "He really understands what I'm trying to do." For the rest of her life, Sheila's racing outfit, called a kit, will carry a band of stars and stripes, the mark of our nation's best racers. No catching her 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
