Reciprocal Club The University Club of Memphis By Michelle Van Slack, Director Member Services Walking in Memphis Visit for Elvis, the soul, and tennis at the club M emphis, Tennessee, is a city with a deep and rich history. For starters, it's the home of Beale Street, the blues-heavy strip of music venues that were a major influence on a young Elvis Presley. Memphis is also the place of legendary soul music (and food!), with B.B. King, Al Green, and Otis Redding all refining their sound there. Memphis is worth a visit. While you are there, I encourage you to find respite at The University Club. Nestled between two historic residential sections in midtown, this sprawling Southern-style mansion is a great place to recharge and work off any mouthwatering soul food you may have consumed. The University Club was established in 1907 by a group of men longing for fond memories of the "good old college days." Since then, the club has grown into a wonderful social, dining and athletic refuge for its members. A major focus of The University Club is tennis. The club offers 14 well-lit outdoor courts as well as four indoor courts for year-round enjoyment. Whether you are an established tennis player looking for some match play, or a beginner needing an explanation of what "love" is, the club's trained staff can help. During cooler months, your dining options include the courtside dining room, with its well-loved Sunday brunch, and the grill, a tavern-like atmosphere with plenty of TVs. You can also dine al fresco on the courtside patio overlooking the 25-meter outdoor pool—an area that really shines in summertime. The pool is open with a full-time lifeguard from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Whatever brings you to Memphis, make sure to request your letter of introduction to The University Club. A visit will be good for your soul. THE UNIVERSITY CLUB OF MEMPHIS Michelle Van Slack is Director Member Services. Send her feedback on your reciprocal club visits at mvanslack@wac.net.
