the United Kingdom's capital this
summer. is metropolis is nearly 2,000
years old and has the history to prove
it. Travel back in time with a visit to
the Natural History Museum in South
Kensington, where you can browse
some 80 million life and earth speci-
mens. Also on Exhibition Road are the
Science Museum and the Victoria and
Albert Museum—institutions dedicat-
ed to innovation and decorative arts,
respectively.
If you're looking for a more adven-
turous experience, sign up for a mud-
larking tour. ere, you'll explore the
River ames foreshore, where centu-
ries of preserved pottery, jewelry, pipes,
thimbles, and other ancient refuse lie
just under the surface. To truly beach-
comb and take anything home—say,
a Roman coin—you'll need to hold a
permit from Port Authority, but visiting
the riverside at low tide with a guide
is educational and offers a whole new
perspective on London.
Summer is also tennis time. Queue
up at All England Lawn Tennis & Cro-
quet Club in southwest London, where
Wimbledon is held June 30–July 13.
Day-of tickets are available on a first-
come, first-served basis.
If you need some retail therapy or a
snack, head to Covent Garden Market,
where stalls and streets brim with great
cafés and shopping options. So much
of London is easily walkable, so follow
your feet to picture-perfect bridges, red
phone booths, and double-decker buses
all over the city.
