MARCH / APRIL 2020 27 living fit meet the athlete / athletics open house Meet the athlete Hank Bethke By Mae Jacobson, Associate Editor Bellevue native Hank Bethke began playing lacrosse in fourth grade. He credits his earliest coaches, Craig Johnson and Rim Veitas, for helping him fall in love with the game. Hank went on to play at Bellevue High and at Ohio State Uni- versity. He is currently head lacrosse coach for Ballard High School in Seattle. Q. What's your favorite part about lacrosse? A. e community. As a kid, I looked up to players like Cole Nordstrom, Drew Snider, Chris O'Dougherty, and Barton Housman. Now I get to play with them on the WAC team and coach alongside them. anks to the WAC, I am also able to reunite with my old college teammates Spencer Matches and Scott Spencer. We all really appreciate the support we have received from the Club. Q. Tell us about your career achievements. A. In addition to winning three state championships from 2012–2014, I was also the captain of the Bellevue High team, a four-time all-state player, and an All-American player. In college at Ohio State, we attended two Big Ten championships, two quarterfinals, a final four, and a nation- al championship. Q. How has it been making the transition to coaching? A. is spring will be my second season as head coach at Ballard High. Last season we made it to the state quarterfi- nals before falling to Mercer Island. I also spend the sum- mers coaching for CitySide, a club team in Seattle. Q. What does your athletic future hold? A. Our goal on the WAC lacrosse team is to go undefeat- ed. We are currently league champions and have not lost a game. We have high hopes for the 2020 season that started in February and plan to keep the trophy in our possession. Q. How do you use the Club? A. In addition to training for lacrosse, I play in the B basket- ball league. e competition is fierce, and I've met a lot of great people.
