28 WAC Magazine | wac.net living fit exercise of the month / instructor insights Instructor insights Carol Sele | Yoga Former collegiate rower Carol Sele discovered her passion for yoga as a student ath- lete at California State University, Long Beach. "I was a port-side rower, so the right half of my body was much more developed, and I had neck and lower back pain," Carol explains. "Yoga relieved my issues and helped me build strength and flexibility." Aer a year as a fitness director at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Carol opened her own studio in Coupeville in 2009. Four years later, she expanded her practice by opening a second studio in Oak Harbor. Carol initially came to the WAC in 2019 as a yoga workshop attendee, where she met Fitness Programs Manager George Sommer- rock. "I followed my instinct and got the nerve to tell George how much I'd like to teach at the Club," she says. George agreed, and Carol has taught two weekly classes since. She recently got an apartment near the Club so she could be closer to the WAC and spend time with her son, Jake, a pianist for the Seattle Symphony's Pops Series. Carol's other child, Jessica, is a stand-up comedian based in Los Angeles. —Carol Sele teaches yoga at 8:30 am and noon on Tuesdays. A N I TA N O W A C K A Exercise of the Month Shoulder Stretch with Resistance Band Personal trainer Conrad Larsen demonstrates a Shoulder Stretch with Resistance Band. This exercise relieves tight muscles, increases flexibility, and can help you warm up for a workout. 1. Hold one end of a resistance band in each hand with your arms up and out to the sides. 2. Pull each end of the resistance band, widening your arms and bringing the resistance band toward your chest. Release stretch by moving your hands back toward each other to the beginning position. Complete 10–15 repetitions.
