C O U R T E S Y J U L I E S P E I D E L ( 3 ) Born in Seattle and raised in the Pacific Northwest and Eu- rope, artist Julie Speidel strives to build a contemporary bridge between organic shape and human interaction with nature. Inspired by the British Isles' stone megaliths, Chinese burial figures, petroglyph carvings of India, and totemic arts of many indigenous groups, Speidel imbues her work with the power of ancient form and the modernity of 21st-century sensibilities. Speidel successfully marries the past to the present through elegant geometric shapes designed to elevate and interact with their surroundings while remaining inextricably linked to the natural world. e shapes of her sculpture carry through to her works on paper, linking the two mediums.e con- versation created between sculpture and print is elevated by Speidel's masterful use of color, poised composition, and the natural qualities of bronze, glass, stone, and handmade paper. Deeply rooted in eternal dialogue with nature, Speidel's prints and sculptures are true Northwest treasures. Come see them in the Grand Staircase Gallery through September.
