President & CEO Chuck Nelson reflects on retirement and his career 34 WAC Magazine | wac.net 13 LU C K Y LU C K Y By Darrick Meneken | Photos by Daniel Berman President & CEO Chuck Nelson reflects on his life and career as retirement nears T hirteen years after Chuck Nelson stepped into the role of President & CEO of the Washington Athletic Club, the leader who oversaw major Clubhouse improve- ments and guided the Club through one of the most tumultu- ous times in American history is ready to retire. If that number, 13, sounds familiar, you're probably someone who remembers Chuck from his days on the college football field, where his Uni- versity of Washington career reached its apex with a win in the 1982 Rose Bowl and selection as a consensus All-American. Five years in the NFL followed, but it was his return to Seattle and time as a Husky broadcaster, leader of the region's biggest golf tournament, and top executive of the WAC that solidified Chuck's place in Northwest history. As his February 1 retirement approached, we talked to Chuck about his career, legacy, and what's next.
