Thriving in “The Big Dark” | Meet the Athlete | Instructor Insights Dubbed "The Big Dark," the days be- tween mid-November and early March in the Pacific Northwest can oen seem like they never really begin. It's more like a perpetual dusk. Worry not! Whether you're enjoy- ing the 6th Floor oasis that is Helene Madison Pool, working out in a high-en- ergy fitness class, relaxing in a sauna, or enjoying some virtual fun, the WAC has what you need to feel light, bright, and energized all season. Here's a look at some great options for breaking through e Big Dark and charging head first into the long bright days ahead. Winter wellness Meet the athlete League basketball Squash tips Water magic Swim in the 6th Floor Pool, where vaulted ceilings and two-story windows make for a bright and airy space even on gray days. Doing laps is a low-impact way to keep your cardio up and increase your lung capacity. Or try Aqua Fit Yoga, a combination of mindfulness and movement. Other classes include high-intensity Aqua Boot Camp, swim lessons for kids, and Deep-Water Cardio. Staying in swimming shape will get you ready for a Seattle summer of lakeside visits and boating trips. If you feel less than confident in your skills, seek a lesson from our aquatics team. "It's never too late to learn how to swim, and WAC instructors teach everyone from total beginners to athletes want- ing to get race-ready," Aquatics Supervisor Drew Lackman says. "Knowing how to swim keeps you safe in a city surrounded by water, and it's amazing exercise!"
