24 WAC Magazine | wac.net club life reciprocal club Past, present and Philly The Union League combines history with a whole lot more One of the most diversified and highly regarded clubs in our reciprocal network is e Union League of Philadelphia. e club has hosted a wide range of dignitaries, from U.S. presidents and other heads of state to industrialists and entertainers. It has also repeatedly been named the No. 1 city club in the country. Part of what makes the Union League unique is the combination of history in its original location, known as the League House, and amenities found at five satellite properties, all acquired in the past seven years. e list includes three championship golf courses, a beach cottage on the Jersey shore, and the 1790s Guard House in Gladwyne, just outside the city, that exudes an upscale tavern steakhouse vibe. Union League Liberty Hill is the club's most recent acquisition, undertaken this past March. It boasts a Gary Player–designed 18-hole golf course, a clubhouse with restaurant, 120 overnight rooms, and 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space. For reciprocal club members, access to the full facilities of the League House and satellite properties, including e Bungalow on the Jersey shore—just a 90-minute drive from Philly—is garnered with an overnight stay. If your travels have you in town only briefly, consider a docent-led tour of e Heritage Center, located inside the League House. e center exhibits historic collections, including works from e Union League Legacy Foundation. To visit a reciprocal club, WAC members must request a letter of introduction. Log on to wac.net/loi.
