E M I L I O H U E R TA S John Torrance enters real estate hall of fame Life member John Torrance recent- ly entered the NAIOP Commercial Real Estate Development Association Washington State Hall of Fame. John was named to the hall for a 50-plus-year career of outstanding contributions to commercial real estate in Seattle. Considered a groundbreaking leader by many, John's contributions to Seattle include the original vision that led to what is now the Stadium District, T-Mobile Park's unique retractable roof, and even the new waterfront that is now coming into existence. In fact, many people believe that T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field) never would have been built without John's efforts and that the Mariners might have le Seattle. "When they built the Kingdome, nobody wanted to go inside the stadium on a nice sunny day, so attendance was always down," John recalled in a hall of fame interview. "So we decided we had to have a back-to-the-future ballpark but with a retractable roof." John accepted the award this past November at a sold-out black-tie gala. As a Seattle visionary, John followed in the footsteps of his father, early WAC member Torchy Torrance, the namesake of Torchy's restaurant. Other projects John worked on through his career include Washington Park Tower in Madison Park and Insig- nia condominiums in Belltown. Asked about the best piece of advice he's ever received, John recalled what 1962 Seattle World's Fair leader Eddie Carlson once told him: "Just keep going." WAC Life Members are awarded for 50-plus years of WAC membership.
