JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2019 7 Committing to 2019 is is the time of year when we speak of New Year's resolutions, of improving ourselves and committing (or recommitting) to bettering ourselves. ese vows are oen focused on actions— eating better, working out more, taking that trip to a long-desired location. Here's where my mind is right now—committing to attitudes as much as actions. "Better" starts with me and my attitudes and my efforts. I encourage your consideration as you plan your 2019. Commit to kindness. Commit to civility. Nice is a good thing. Resolve to listen more than talk, to be willing to learn and to maybe be wrong. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos believes the strongest minds are those that are constantly revising their understanding and changing their minds oen as they are adding and processing new information to reach new conclusions. Pledge to serve and lead those around you to better lives—lives full of trust and caring and character. Choose a drive for excellence over average. Seek happy over angry (seems logical, right?). Resolve to discuss, not demand. Search for solutions, not absolute victory. We are all in this together, so it makes sense that we find ways to work with each other to make our communi- ties and Seattle and our workplaces and the WAC as good as they can be. Together, so much more can be accomplished, with more happiness and deep satisfaction and joy along the journey. It has been said that "humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less." And still eat more vegetables and do more push-ups.
