Get to know the other Washington
D.C.'s University Club is steeped in history
Established in 1904, e University
Club of Washington, D.C., is one of
the nation's most historic membership
organizations. Located in the heart of
the capital, just three blocks from the
White House, e University Club has a
membership that reflects its ZIP code. In
addition to many government officials,
members also have included heads of
state, ambassadors, judges, and notable
business and civic leaders. In fact, e
University Club's first president was
William Howard Ta, who would go on
to become the president of the United
States just five years later.
e current Georgian-style clubhouse
was designed during the Roaring Twen-
ties for the Racquet Club of Washington.
When the Great Depression hit, the two
organizations merged. e seven-story,
recently renovated structure offers an
elegant dining room, named in honor of
Ta, as well as a lively grill, cozy cocktail
lounge, and intimate pub.
During your stay, you can take a dip
in the 60-foot swimming pool, play
squash, use cardio equipment, or relax
at the day spa. e club also hosts a pop-
ular annual book fair that attracts more
than 60 bestselling authors. Contact the
club for details.
Committed to providing an environ-
ment that encourages intellectual pur-
suit, good fellowship, fine dining, and
quality athletics, e University Club's
historical fortitude is sure to please.
