Contact Nine mantras for a healthy winter Learn from WAC Dietitian Liz Wyosnick The holidays are about more than a meal Think about the other treats of the season: more time off, visitors, family time, slower days, togetherness, colorful lights, the gift of giving, and other joys this time of the year brings. Diet talk is boring Everyone is on their own health journey. Keep the dinner table clear of diet discussions. Don't comment on body size or food choices. Don't delay until the new year! December tells us to indulge and January insists we restrict. Deny this cycle when you start any budding resolutions today in a small or a big way. Small shifts now result in lasting habits. Routine keeps me calm Normalcy keeps you sane amidst family visits, vacations, daycare closures, school breaks, and days off. Stick with your fitness routine, maintain a supportive sleep schedule, and keep your pantry well- stocked with healthy staples. Veggies keep me vibrant! Brighten a beige holiday spread with vegetables! Dishes such as winter salads, hummus and veggies, and seasonal fruit offer fiber and nutrients that fight digestive discomfort. Indulge, enjoy, and move on You can eat office cookies without ruining your healthy intentions! Savor your indulgences mindfully, move on, and make supportive diet decisions for the rest of the day. Liz offers in-person and telehealth nutrition sessions. Sessions can often be covered by insurance. Email lwyosnick@wac.net. No sense in saving calories Nourish yourself throughout the day even if you have big meal plans later! Skipping meals means you go into your next meal overly hungry. Distinct meals and balanced snacks keep you on track. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate Richer foods and holiday libations pair perfectly with a lot of water. Drink 12–16 ounces of water right when you wake up and continue to sip throughout the day. Fifty ounces should be your target. Sugar is always in season Enjoy holiday treats but avoid the detriment of a scarcity mentality—sweet indulgences are always available.
