MAY / JUNE 2018 9 first take grand staircase gallery / kids book Old meets new in staircase exhibit Welcome Willow Bader's lively and playful paintings to the Grand Staircase Gallery. Rendered using the ancient technique of encaustic—pigment suspended in hot wax and used as paint—Bader's work captures bright scenes of music, dance, and food. She paints directly on fine-grained wood, neither prepping her surface nor sketch- ing the content beforehand. e resulting scenes transport the viewer with a direct immediacy into the streets, restaurants, dance clubs, and performances before them. e dynamic nature of encaustic—Bader only has mere moments to complete a limited number of brushstrokes before again soening her brush in hot wax—lends itself well to the physicality and bold color of her work. Sensual scenes of tango dancers, musicians, and lavish meals well-enjoyed appear almost lit from within, thanks to the translucent character of wax. Educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Bader melds modern subject matter with classic form and a traditional medium. Stop by the Grand Staircase Gallery to see the world as Bader sees it—bold and full of life.
