14 WAC Magazine | wac.net Bento boxes of healthy foods make for easy mealtimes and happy tummies. u Kid Cuisine Pack a Picnic Crab Feast Lobsterfest Taste By Eric Floyd, WAC Executive Chef Keeping kids eating healthy can be a chal- lenge. When I was young there were a lot of foods that didn't appeal to me. My palate has changed dramatical- ly since then, but I still remember my childhood likes and dislikes—yes on tuna, no on egg salad. All parents want their kids to eat healthy, but they also want them to be healthy eaters. Herein lies the challenge. As we prepare menus here at the WAC—for kids and adults alike—we try to reinvent food in fun and creative ways. Aer all, how a dish looks oen determines if we try it or not. Have you ever ordered something at a restaurant aer seeing it arrive at a nearby table looking delicious? Me, too! Especially with kids, fun and creative food styling can make the difference between refusing meals and asking for seconds. Enter the bento box. We've all seen prepackaged lunch packs in the grocery store. Although big on convenience, these packs are jammed with processed foods high in salt and sugar. Instead, design your own creative meals. Lunch is a perfect place to start. A simple assortment of cheese, crackers, fruit, and a low-sugar homemade cookie will satisfy most appetites. From there, you can add creativity by using cookie cutters to turn sandwiches into shapes and characters. Pancakes and cheese are also easy to cut. Other ideas include organizing orange slices in a swirl to form a flower, using blueberries to make a face inside Fun counts with kid cuisine Help your kids eat healthier one star-shaped sandwich at a time O L I V I A B R E N T ( 3 )
