MARCH / APRIL 2018 23 1 2 Exercise of the Month External Shoulder Rotation with Cable Your shoulders experience daily strain from a number of activities. Everything from how you text to how you carry groceries can cause joint pain. Add exercises to your routine that focus on the external rotation of the shoulder joint to relieve irritation. WAC personal trainer Misa Rohan demonstrates one such exercise. Adjust a resistance cable to elbow-height and stand with your right side to the cable. Grab the handle with your left hand and keep your elbow pressed to your side. Maintain contact between your elbow and torso, with your arm extended forward at a 90-degree angle, and rotate your arm in a backhand motion. Return arm to position one and repeat. Switch sides after 3–4 reps. 1 2 A N I TA N O W A C K A ( 2 ) A N I TA N O W A C K A living fit exercise of the month / instructor insights Instructor Insights Linda Schetky | Boot Camp, Blitz, Kettle Blast, Xcelerate Portland native Linda Schetky spent her childhood summers hiking and swimming with her three older sisters in the picturesque wilds of Mount Hood. ose early years spent outdoors instilled a love for movement and hard work. Linda carried that passion to team sports in high school and college, where she played intramural volleyball at the University of Washington. Aer college, she continued to play vol- leyball and began taking group exercise classes. Eventually, Linda noticed one of her instructors was struggling to find a good substitute. She jumped on the opportunity, earned her certification, and began filling in. Since then, she has established herself as a full-time instructor. Fitness Programs Manager George Sommerrock recruited her to the WAC in March 2017. "My classes are the highlight of my day," Linda says. "WAC members are kind, hard working, and they make my job super exciting." In her spare time, Linda competes in road and trail runs. She is also mother to two daughters in high school.
