Meet the athlete Naomi Mason By Mae Jacobson, Associate Editor Naomi Mason tackled her first triathlon in 2001 at the urging of a friend. Despite minimal training, Naomi completed the Danskin race in Seat- tle and was hooked. A member of the WAC Tri/ Cycle Club since 2010, Naomi has grown into a successful triathlete and placed second in her age division at last summer's Seafair Triathlon. Q. Tell us about some of your recent accomplishments. A. I completed my first half Ironman in Santa Cruz last Septem- ber. I placed third in my division. I also finished in the top 8 percent of my age group at the 2017 New York City Marathon. In addition, I ran a half marathon in Bath, England, with some fellow WAC triathletes. Q. What's your training routine? A. I swim two to three days a week with the Tri/Cycle Club, spin two to three days a week on the 4th Floor, li weights two days a week (also on the 4th Floor), and run three to four days a week— either on the treadmills or up Seneca Street for hill repeats. I try to get a long run in on the weekend, too. Q. What's your favorite part about doing triathlons? A. I love the camaraderie and friendships I've formed, the variety in training, and all the gear and statistics I can geek out over. Q. Do you have any advice for aspiring triathletes? A. Go for it! I remember when I could barely swim six laps in the pool. It took me a while to get comfortable. But with dedication you will see a difference in your physical and mental performance. It's addictive. If you're considering training and have questions, don't hesitate to ask me. I love to spread the joy. Q. What are your plans for the future? A. I'm running in the Boston Marathon in April! Aer that, I'm hoping to race in the Victoria half Ironman. And the Seafair Triathlon during the summer is a must. living fit rugby awards / meet the athlete B A R B A R A K I N N E Y J O H N B A N G L U K E R U TA N
