Past WAC President Carl Meurk dies Former WAC President Carl Meurk, who received a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1942 and went on to become vice president of Todd Shipyards in Seattle before retiring in 1984, passed away on November 5, 2017. He was 97. Carl served as WAC President, a role since renamed WAC Chairman, in 1976. He was also a member of the 101 Club and many other organizations. He enjoyed travel, woodworking, golf, and boating. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Richard Barnett Meurk. He is survived by his wife of nearly 73 years, Jacki; his sister, Mary Louise Pollaczek; three children (Lynda, Lawrence and Terence); and seven grandchildren. J O H N B A N G D A V I D R Y D E R Welcoming the food world WAC Executive Chef Eric Floyd will serve as local conference coordinator when Club & Resort Business magazine's 2018 Chef to Chef Conference comes to Seattle this March 4–6. "It's a huge honor," Eric says. "We'll be welcoming chefs and food and beverage professionals from around the country. It's a great chance to show off the WAC and the city." More than 400 attendees are expected for the three-day conference. Jubilee's biggest winner Congratulations to WAC member Phil Greely on winning the Jubilee grand prize, a 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250. Phil oen uses the WAC as a second office, meeting clients in Hagerty's, and occasionally spends time decompressing at the Club aer work. He purchased two chance boards on a whim, turning a $100 investment into one sweet ride. Club improvements Some of the Club's popular event spaces on the lobby level will be receiving updates during the early part of 2018. In the Noble Room, new ceiling tiles will put a final touch on a room renovation that also included new carpet and lighting. Elsewhere, the Johnson Lobby Lounge will receive a full faceli, including new carpet, paint, ceiling tiles, and light- ing. During that work, new carpet and some new furniture will go into the Voogd Library. All work is scheduled for the first two weeks of the new year. Meanwhile, the Elevator Modernization Project contin- ues with work on Car C, the third of the four high-rise cars to be upgraded.
