Grand staircase gallery / heart month
Pensive states
Enter the tranquil and lonely world of Chicago-based painter Susan Hall, our
first new artist of 2018 to be featured in the Grand Staircase Gallery. Women
and animals lovingly rendered in muted colors appear deep in thought, shrouded
in the intricate arabesques and so lace patterns that overlay all of Hall's paintings.
A single, bright source of light and a masterful use of tonal range highlight the
downturned faces and foreheads of Hall's subjects, compelling the viewer to join
these women in their contemplative states. Still, it's easy to feel like a voyeur
peering into Hall's work—with backs turned, eyes averted, and heads askew, none
of her subjects invite the viewer to know what haunts them. e result is a sense
of detached mystery punctuated by rich sepia tones and the drama of furtive
expressions, clasped hands, and
slumped shoulders.
Almost dreamlike in nature,
what's le unsaid by Hall's work
asks the viewer to look inward
and engage with empathy. Walk
through the Grand Staircase
Gallery between the 1st and 3rd
floors to reflect on the personal
narratives that shape your own
introspective interludes and
pause for a quiet moment. On
display through March, this
exhibit is being shown courtesy
of Abmeyer + Wood.
