In fact, knee prob- lems oen come not from major inju- ries—sports or otherwise—but rather from repetitive micro-trauma that results from biomechanic alteration of the spine architecture. ese alter- ations are themselves oen the result of intense training, improper posture, or weight issues. Lower extremities, especially the knee and ankle, oen compensate for pelvic bone deviation or dysfunction. If your pelvic bone is structurally twisted to one side to some degree, your knee would twist the other way to keep your body in balance. Stress on the knee from your body-weight and gravity shis to the side—typically the inside of the knee joint—rather than maintaining even distribution. is change can cause a rapid degeneration of the knee joint, a condition called osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis, the meniscus, ligaments, and cartilage between the joint are damaged and lose their shock- absorbing qualities, causing pain as well as alteration of your gait. Once osteoar- thritis of the knee joint has progressed, the ligament integrity weakens, muscles become imbalanced, and it will most likely also affect your foot mechanics. e symptoms of osteoarthritis in the knee joint vary but commonly include knee stiffness, swelling, pain around the kneecap, and a decrease in mobility. Tightness of the iliotibial band and Baker's cyst are also possible. Knee pain is not something you should ignore. Instead, think about how long it has been around, how it might have started, and how it has progressed. Share this information with a doctor or physical therapist. A simple change in your posture could create massive benefits. So could professional advice about how to strengthen weaker muscles in order to prevent further injuries or degeneration.
