4 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SPRING 2016 School' s out for summer! A h, the long lazy days of summer. School is out and time begins to blend together in a haze of bright mornings, sunny afternoons, seemingly endless twilights, and, alas, the occasional bout of boredom. It's undeniable—the hot wasteland of summer vacation can hinder even the most imaginative of minds. Leisure once so longed for becomes a case of the summertime doldrums. Well, we have the cure! Put the dreaded "I'm bored" to rest with WAC kids summer camps, aka WAC Juniors Summer Daze. "Last year was such a success, we decided to expand our ideas and offer a little something more this summer," WAC Event Manager Mary Ellen Jilek says. "Our goal is to get kids out of the midweek summer slump. And what better way than to get them outside and exploring this great city." Inspired by popular Club events, Mary Ellen and former Aquatics & Junior Programs Manager Kelly Parr set out to create a summer camp schedule that incorporates kid-friendly versions of favorites such as glassblowing and the Lake Union scavenger hunt. "We took some of the most popular Club Programs events and tweaked them to work for WAC kids," Mary Ellen says. "Parents are going to be amazed by what we have in store, and their kids are going to be talking about it for weeks afterward." Starting June 29 and running every Wednesday through August 17, WAC Juniors Summer Daze will keep kids ages 6–12 busy all day long. The weekly Wednesday adventures will traverse the city—and beyond—and give junior Club members the opportunity to discover Seattle's history, art and traditions while making new friends and enjoying local sights and activities. Weekly adventures made for WAC kids Discounts for siblings and multiple days are available. Transportation and lunch included. Junior members may invite friends to join the fun ($10 nonmember fee).
