Kicking the ball around during half- time of his older sister's soccer games led to club soccer and eventually a position on the UCLA Bruins. Just two years into his college career, Kelyn was drafted third overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution, where he played until 2018 and in 2020. He made his debut with the Seattle Sounders in 2021 and played on the 2022 Champions League–winning team. Kelyn volunteers at the pediatric cancer nonprofit Jesse Rees Foundation and runs Vino FC, a commu- nity-based wine subscription. He also plays for the WAC's 30+ men's soccer team. Kelyn works as an insurance broker at USI and enjoys the challenges of his new career. Q. What was it like entering the MLS after just one year of college? A. It was the best decision. I've never looked back. I was young and I ended up somewhere I probably never would have cho- sen on my own. I learned to grow during a really good time to play soccer. It was perfect timing for me in a great city. Q. How was playing for the Sounders? A. Exciting. I wanted to play in front of my folks, and I want- ed to be closer to my people. It was right aer the pandemic, and we got to see fans start to trickle into the stadium. ere were a lot of emotions, and every time we played the emo- tions got bigger. Q. Where do you find motivation to train at a high level? A. I love the game. It's brought me so much joy and opened so many doors. I also love winning and the euphoria that comes with it. at's the coolest feeling in the world. Q. How are you finding your way since retiring from soccer? A. At first it was hard, but new experiences are great. I went to two weddings and had Friday night beers with buddies— things I could never do before. Now I'm using my brain more than my legs and finding a new niche. I'm having fun. Q. Any advice for aspiring athletes? A. My dad always said three things to me, and I stand by them. Have fun, be creative, and don't let anyone else work harder than you.
