Looking for an international excursion?
Next time, rather than fly to another
continent, try a three-hour drive. Our
neighbor to the north, British Columbia,
Canada, offers gorgeous sights, abundant
culture, and incredible experiences as
well as Canada's third-most populous city,
Vancouver, whose glass towers rise from
the sea with mountains at their back.
Downtown Vancouver is Canada's
most densely populated neighborhood.
Start your visit at Stanley Park, a 1,000-
acre (make that 405-hectare) park that
covers the northern half of the downtown
peninsula. e park is perfect for biking
and walking and boasts beautiful forests,
aboriginal village sites, and a beach, not
to mention the enormous Second Beach
Pool, which is open in summer.
Aer working up an appetite, grab
lunch on Granville Island, where you
can enjoy eats from a public market with
up-close marina views. Granville Island
is great for shopping, as is downtown's
Robson Street. Other popular sights
include the Museum of Anthropolo-
gy, the Richmond Night Market, Lynn
Canyon Park, the Capilano Suspension
Bridge, and the Gastown neighborhood,
to name only a few. Plus, a short drive
will quickly bring you into the massive
Coast Range of peaks and crags that
make British Columbia an outdoor
lover's dream.
Looking beyond the Canadian
mainland, British Columbia's capital
city, Victoria, sits on the southern end
of Vancouver Island. e Garden City
lives up to its name, especially for any-
one visiting world-renowned Butchart
Gardens. Aer you've stopped to smell
the roses, the Royal BC Museum, Craig-
darroch Castle, and Beacon Hill Park
are must-see destinations. And for the
ultimate seaside getaway, a long drive to
Tofino on the Pacific Coast will take you
to some of the world's most beautiful
wild beaches. All of this and no flight
required!
