Giving back to those who gave
Member Walter Liang honors fellow vets with flights to Washington, D.C.
Vietnam War veteran Walter Liang's military service to
protect our country may have ended long ago, but he never
stopped serving.
Walter joined the WAC in 1998 and is a former board
member of Puget Sound Honor Flight, the Pacific North-
west's chapter of the Honor Flight Network, a national
nonprofit organization that honors United States veterans by
flying them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials of the
wars they served in—all at no expense to the veterans.
"Each trip was a different experience with my veteran
sharing his war experience with me," Walter says. "It was
such an honor to be among the veterans. It gave me a sense
of purpose that we give them the dignity and respect they so
deserve."
Walter flew 27 Honor Flights to Washington, D.C., from
2013–2020. His selflessness and willingness to give back
showed at the WAC, as well. Before his recent move to
Sacramento to care for his brother, Walter was dedicated to
fostering community at the WAC. "He was a daily fixture
in Coed Fitness and a tireless advocate of the Club," former
WAC Chairwoman Tammy Young says.
ey say distance makes the heart grow fonder, and the
same can be said of Walter's love of the WAC community. Even
from afar, he continues to attend Dr. Jim Weber's yoga classes
over Zoom.
