18 WAC Magazine | wac.net taste easter / cocktail corner THE BLOODY MARY: BEYOND BRUNCH By Rose Andres, WAC Bartender You may have met your first Bloody Mary after a hard night, but this vitamin-packed combination of tomato juice, vodka, citrus, and spice offers more than morning-after relief. As with most classic cocktails, a bevy of boastful bartenders lays claim to the Bloody Mary's origin. Popular theory names Fernand "Pete" Petiot as the first alchemist to mix up this savory combination. That theory places Petiot's invention at the New York Bar in Paris—a favorite haunt of Ernest Hemingway—in 1921. The drink gained popularity when Petiot moved back to the states and began mixing Bloody Marys at New York's King Cole Bar. Modern Bloody Marys are garnished with everything from bacon to fried chicken—a far cry from the traditional olive, celery, and cit- rus wedge. As for the drink itself, there are no rules other than the base. Try this version after a hard night or to kick off an easy day. Cheers!
