Dale Chihuly
on the WAC's
chandeliers
When we asked
WAC member
and world-
renowned
artist Dale
Chihuly about
Czech glass and
its importance
in glassmaking
history, we had
no idea we'd
hit so close to
home.
"e first time I saw Czech glass
was at the Montreal World's Fair
in 1967," Dale told us. "ey were
showing the sculptures of Stanislav
Libensky and Yaroslava Brychtova,
who always worked as a team. It was
the most extraordinary glass I had ever
seen, and this was my eye into the rich
history of glassmaking in that part of
the world."
At the time, Dale was 25 years old
and yet to start Pilchuck Glass School
and emerge as one of the world's
preeminent glass artists.
"e exchange of ideas, techniques,
and culture continues to flourish
between our region and Czechia at
Pilchuck today," Dale says.
e WAC chandeliers in the Crystal
Ballroom serve as a testament to the
enduring power and beauty of Czech
glasswork. Each consists of more than
2,000 pieces and weighs 550 pounds.
"Having visited Czech glass
factories and studios over the years, I
am in awe of the technique involved
in making these beautiful crystal
chandeliers at the WAC," Dale says.
"We are all very lucky to have them
here."
